A Warm Welcome to the DGPs/ÖGP Congress 2024 in Vienna!

Dear colleagues and friends,

We are delighted to welcome you to the joint DGPs/ÖGP Congress 2024 in Vienna! We are excited to host this academic event and connect with you, our fellow psychological scientists. In 2024, the congress focuses on the important relationships between humans and their environment, including their social environment and the media.

Vienna has a rich history in academic psychology. Famous psychologists such as Sigmund Freud, Charlotte Bühler, Franz Brentano, and Marie Jahoda called it their home. The congress will take place in the beautiful building of the University of Vienna, located directly in the heart of the city. The traditional main building, built in the late 19th Century under the architect Heinrich Ferstel, provides a perfect backdrop for our event.

The congress proper will kick off on Monday, September 16th, 2024, but workshops will already start on Sunday, September 15th, 2024.

Below, you find the most important dates regarding submissions, registration, etc. For the sake of simplicity, we have kept the website largely in English to provide easy access to information for our foreign guests as well. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions, but make sure you read the FAQs first!

See you in Vienna!

Yours sincerely,

The organizers of the conference

Severe Storm Warning for Austria - Your Contribution

Dear Colleagues,

The Austrian Railways (ÖBB) currently recommend to postpone non-urgent trips (https://www.oebb.at/de/neuigkeiten/unwetterwarnung). Because of expected heavy rainfall and storms in Austria, deviations and delays in train services are to be expected from Friday, September 13th to Sunday 15th. Details of which ÖBB train connections are affected will be updated on oebb.at & SCOTTY as soon as we have information.

It is also possible (if not likely) that the subway station "Schottentor", the closest to the venue, will also be closed over the weekend. You could take the subway to the station "Volkstheater" and then get on a tram to reach "Schottentor" above ground level. Please use this LINK to plan your route.

Please consider this information when planning your trip to the DGPs Congress/OeGP Conference. In case you cannot make it in time, we will do our best to accomodate your digital presentation.

All the best, stay safe, the DGPs-Congress/OeGP-Conference Organizing Team

Film "Lost Highway" CANCELLED

Dear Colleagues,

Thank you for registering for the pre-conference workshop "Films + Discussion - Relationships in Crisis: Lost Highway". We have decided not to show the film "Lost Highway" as it is problematic from a feminist perspective. The film often presents female characters as projection screens for male fears and fantasies, sexualises and objectifies them and uses violence against women as an aesthetic device. These portrayals reinforce negative gender stereotypes and patriarchal power structures.

Instead, we will probably show the film "Tomorrow is another day". (We hope that the DVD will be available from mid-August).

The film "Tomorrow is another day" sheds light on the dynamics of relationships in crisis, particularly through the portrayal of Delia Santucci's life with her violent husband and daughter. Directed by Paola Cortellesi, the story shows the physical and psychological stresses caused by domestic violence, as well as the social norms and expectations of the post-war period, which further exacerbate the conflicts in the marriage. Despite the difficult circumstances, it also emphasises Delia's inner strength and her struggle for hope and change, especially for her daughter to have a freer life than hers.

We hope you enjoy this film too. If not, please consider returning your registration for this pre-conference workshop so that others can attend.

Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience this decision may have caused you today.

We are currently processing the requests, and, if you have placed a request, you should receive information about the degree to which we can accomodate your wishes shortly. For those who have not sent us requests for children daycare yet, but were intending to do so in the future, in case we can offer residual daycare slots, we will offer them publicly as soon as this is possible.

The Theme of This Year's Conference

August 23rd, 2023

Our relationships to each other and the planet are on the line. They are subject to man-made change, with an impact far beyond the present day and human control. In the past decades, few topics have had an impact on science and society comparable to that of climate change and social media.

The motto of the DGPs 2024 - Humans | Environment | Media (German "Menschen | Mitwelt | Medien"), therefore, focuses the important connections between humans and their social and physical environment, including the digital or social media. In 2024, the DGPs congress devotes several key note lectures and numerous talks and symposia to these important topics. Sabine Pahl (Vienna, AUT, Homepage) and Vera Araujo Soares (Heidelberg, Germany, Homepage) will give key note lectures on Environmental Psychology, and Amy Orben (Cambridge, UK, Homepage) and Kelly Babchishin (Carleton, CA, Homepage) give key note lectures on the Psychology of Social Media.

Digital Participation

June 19th, 2023

If your physical participation at the DGPs congress in Vienna is not possible and you want to attend digitally, you can register in advance (before June 30th, 2024) for a digital presentation/participation. Registration for digital participation is not possible after June 30th, 2024!

Submissions, Registration, and Fees

March 17th, 2023

We kindly inform you abstract submission for all formats will be possible from October 1st, 2023, until January 20th, 2024. Please read the relevant requirements before submitting here. Please note that you must register separately for the conference. In general, the first author has to register before June 30th, 2024, as otherwise submissions cannot be considered for the final programme.

Registration for the conference will open in April 2024, with early bird registration closing on June 30th, 2024. For those who are unable to register by the early bird deadline, on-site registration will be available at a higher fee.

You can take a look at the registration fees here, and at all relevant dates and deadlines here. We will also incorporate various social events into the program. Kindly stay tuned for additional information and details on associated fees for these events.

Our aim is to organise the event according to the criteria of the Austrian Eco-label for Green Meetings. Therefore, we kindly ask you to travel to Vienna by train rather than by plane, and to use public transportation instead of taxis during your stay, if possible. We provided you with the necessary information for a safe and uncomplicated journey to Vienna, including information about your arrival as well as mobility options in the city.

We appreciate your understanding and support in promoting environmentally-friendly mobility.
