Green Meeting

Our aim is to organise the event according to the criteria of the Austrian Eco-label for Green Meetings. Therefore, we kindly ask you to travel to Vienna by train rather than by plane, and to use public transportation instead of taxis during your stay, if possible. We appreciate your understanding and usage of environmentally-friendly mobility.

Arrival by Plane

Vienna International Airport (Flughafen Wien-Schwechat; IATA: VIE; ICAO: LOWW) is located 18 km southeast of central Vienna. It is Austria's biggest airport and features a dense network of European destinations, as well as long-haul flights to Asia, North America, and Africa.

How to get from the Airport to the 53rd DGPs congress/15th ÖGP conference

When you arrive, simply follow the exit signs, and then the red signs reading ÖBB, or "S-Bahn" (or showing a white "S" on a blue background). Take the S7 train (direction: "Wien Floridsdorf" or "Laa/Thaya") and get off at "Praterstern".

Take Subway U2 (purple line, direction: "Schottentor"/"Karlsplatz") and alight at "Schottentor - Universität". Between about 5:30 AM and midnight, subways and trams leave every 10 minutes at least, and the ride takes about 15 to 20 minutes. Walk approximately five minutes to get to the main building of the University of Vienna.

Pleases note that the Subway U2 is currently under construction and may not run between "Karlsplatz" and "Schottentor" at the time of the conference. In this case there are trams labelled "U2Z" replacing the subway on this stretch, as well as ample alternative transport possibilities, which are well marked at the relevant stops.

The subway/tram stop as well as the University of Vienna are accessible barrier-free via elevators and a ramp to the main entrance of the University of Vienna's main building, respectively.

The ride from the Airport to "Schottentor" will last about 45 minutes. Please note that the airport is located outside of the city of Vienna. Tickets can be bought at the red "ÖBB" vending machines located in the Airport train station or online (in advance) via Austrian Federal Railways' (ÖBB's) websites. The total one way fare for this trip is € 4.40 (*).

The CAT is a direct, yet more expensive train connection between the Airport and the city. It takes about 16 minutes to reach the station "Landstrasse-Wien Mitte".

From "Landstrasse-Wien Mitte" you have to get on Subway U4 (green line, direction: "Heiligenstadt") and alight at the station "Schottenring". Change to  Subway U2 (purple line, direction: Karlsplatz) and alight at "Schottentor - Universität". Walk approximately three minutes to the main building of the University of Vienna.

During operating hours, every 30 minutes, the CAT leaves at and returns to the Airport. To the Airport: 05:37 to 23:07. From the Airport: 06:08 to 23:38 (see CAT schedule).

Some Airlines offer a check-in at the CAT Vienna Centre Terminal. Tickets can be bought online (for a slightly reduced price, € 14.90*) or at the green vending machines at the Airport train station. The one-way fare at the vending machines is € 16 (*). Purchasing a return ticket for €24.90 offers a more cost-effective option per ride.

Please note that you will need an additional ticket for public transport inside the city of Vienna (single trip fare: € 2.60(*)).

There is also the possibility to take an aiport bus (Vienna Airport Lines) . Buses from the airport usually stop at:

  • VAL1: Vienna Westbahnhof (Subways U3 and U6) & Vienna Hauptbahnhof (Subway U1)
  • VAL2: Vienna Morzinplatz/Schwedenplatz (Subways U1 and U4, from here you have to take the tramway 1, direction "Stefan-Fadinger-Platz", and alight at "Schottentor - Universität")
  • VAL3: Donaumarina (Subway U2, from here you have to take the Subway (direction: Karlsplatz) and alight at the station "Schottentor - Universität").

Riding time: approximately 30 minutes

Fares (*): Adults € 9,5  (one way), € 16  (roundtrip)

You can also pick a cab directly in front of the arrival hall. It takes approximately 30 minutes to get to the city centre. A ride will cost about 40-50 € (*). Booking an Airport Cab in advance via one of the services offered in the internet might be slightly cheaper.

(*) We do not guarantee that these fares are still applicable at the time of your arrival in Vienna! Please check the respective websites for the current fares.
